Westpac Bank New Zealand is the second largest bank and financial service providers in New Zealand. Headquartered in Sydney Australia, Westpac has over 12.2 million customers, with almost 1200 branches and a network with more than 2900 ATMs.

The problem

In a highly competitive market, Westpac NZ wanted to be an innovation leader in the region to rapidly deploy their mobile payment vision and deliver enhanced banking experiences to their customer base.

Recognizing that digital commerce is a rapidly evolving environment, Westpac wanted the flexibility to have a roadmap that provided open future options, security and scale for their digital wallet as the market grows over time.

The solution

Westpac chose Carta’s Host Card Emulation and tokenization platform to power their digital wallet and deliver convenient, secure and engaging mobile payment services to their cardholders.

Carta’s platform enables accelerated deployment of cloud-based payments products while minimizing impact on Westpac’s existing systems. This has lowered cost and time associated with development and changes to internal platforms, and accelerated their mobile payment app development. The solution further aided Westpac by streamlining testing and certification processes related to the product deployment and simplifies the ongoing management and updates of the HCE and tokenization technology systems.

The platform has allowed the flexibility to minimize risk associated with new product development as well as given Westpac the agility to adapt as markets and technologies evolve.

Westpac has been able to minimize upfront IT investment and instead focus on building a holistic proposition based around best-in class-user experience and compelling value added services.
