As Chairman and CEO of Carta Worldwide, John brings significant experience in building and leading dynamic, fast-growing businesses. He has extensive capital markets expertise and has held senior leadership roles with international online, cloud-hosting and technology businesses, as well as large companies such as PepsiCo and Allergan. John is also a non-executive director at BTL.co—a publicly listed blockchain company.
Leading Carta’s Growth and Fostering the Vision
Mr. Semkiw is responsible for the strategic vision of the company, including positioning of Carta’s End to End technology and solutions, global market strategy and business development.
With a long track record of success, Mr. Semkiw’s leadership is key to Carta’s growth. Before taking the helm at Carta Worldwide, Brian co-founded Rand Engineering and Rand Worldwide. He grew the latter from a local start-up to a global enterprise of over 1500 employees operating in over 50 countries. Rand Worldwide realized revenues of nearly $500 million after Brian steered the company to an initial public offering in 1993 and then to its privatization in 2007. For several years, Profit Magazine recognized Rand as one of Canada’s fastest growth companies and Brian was awarded The Entrepreneur of the Year in 1996.
Mr. Semkiw’s formal education includes a BASc from the University of Toronto, where he sat on the Dean’s Advisory Board. Brian has also served on the board of Leitch Technologies, a division of Harris Communications and currently sits on the board for Engineering.com.
Ensuring Carta’s Financial Well Being
As CFO, Mr. Clarke oversees Carta’s financial planning and regulatory compliance.
Wayne Clarke has over 30 years’ experience in the banking and payments industries. Mr. Clarke served as CFO and Chief Compliance Officer, and then as CEO and Board member of First Data Canada, the world’s largest transaction processor. He has also served as CFO for Barclays Bank Canada, CFO of CIBC Mellon Canada, as well as Core Treasury Operation Head for the Bank of Montreal.
Throughout his career as a business leader and CGA, Wayne has developed an impressive track record of growing strategic business units, streamlining operations, and leading organizational effectiveness. His strategic financial leadership and decision making are key assets for Carta’s management team.
Carta’s Lead Technology Architect
The man responsible for advancing Carta’s innovative technologies is Chief Technology Officer, Rui Mendes. Mr. Mendes brings a wealth of international experience in system and software development and corporate leadership. He has led projects around the globe from Mozambique, to South Africa, Portugal, to Germany, and North America.
As CEO of NOVAData, a customer relationship management company, Rui led the successful design and implementation of online presence systems for companies such as Microsoft and Bank One. During his time with Siemens AG, Rui deployed geographical information systems for large European telecom companies and government agencies. Armed with his vast knowledge and experience, Mr. Mendes’ innovative technologies set Carta apart from the rest.
Carta’s Operations Team Leader
As Vice President of Operations, Richard Wray aligns technical development with business needs to implement market-ready solutions.
Mr. Wray’s extensive knowledge of the design, implementation, management and operations of payments systems comes from over 27 years of industry experience, consistently delivering leading edge, client-centric solutions.
In addition to leading the development and rollout of the United Kingdom’s first ever consumer Paypass products, Richard has led the implementation of award winning prepaid programs, credit and debit card solutions for international blue-chip companies and served as the Paypass Product Leader at the Mastercard Chip Centre for Excellence. Time and again, Mr. Wray has successfully brought state-of-the-art multi-application EMV and NFC products to market.
A proficient leader with a practical understanding of the issues and processes that underpin successful payment products and operations, Richard delivers invaluable insights to Carta and its clients.
Leading Carta’s Technical and Development Team
Mr. Benlamlih guides the evolution of Carta’s platform and suite of technology solutions.
With over a decade’s experience in payment system technologies, Adil leads Carta’s Technology Centre in Morocco. Mr. Benlamlih is experienced in the integration and certification of major system networks of major global payment systems such as Mastercard, Visa, JCB, Diners and American Express.
Mr. Benlamlih has been credited with helping to create Morocco’s premier interoperability banking network, working as the network’s leader of development and technical operations.
Adil excels in leading infrastructure innovation and tailoring solutions to clients.
Driving Revenue and Growth
Elizabeth (Buffy) Duke joins Carta as a cultivated sales and marketing executive bringing more than 25 years of experience in both corporate and consulting environments covering strategic sales management, product management and business development.
Duke is a highly respected expert in mobile payments and mobile wallets with direct experience in distinguished projects in Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, US and Latin America.
Duke has held senior level positions at MasterCard, C-SAM and Network for Electronic Transfers Singapore (NETS). She has developed expertise in business development, strategic planning and project delivery, e-commerce issues and solutions, mobile and NFC payments, cross-border transactions, card program development and business acquisition.
Prior to joining Carta, Duke was Vice President at MasterCard’s Mobile Transaction Solutions (MTS) group – where she was responsible for a team of Business Development Managers and Pre-Sales technicians focused on driving new business opportunities while growing existing relationships for MTS, covering USA, Canada and Latin America.
Mr. Divker oversees day to day financial operations and reporting at Carta
He brings an accounting background and extensive experience implementing financial processes to achieve measurable business results.
With the skills of a CGA, CPA as well as certified Chartered Accountant degree from India and combined with the insight of someone with more than a decade in the payments industry, Mr. Divker offers unique value to the company. Prior to joining us at Carta he led First Data Canada’s accounting and taxation functions as Director of Finance. That, along with his proven track record working in and managing cross-functional teams, makes him indispensable to the Carta team.
Mr. Divker excels in identifying strategies and opportunities behind numbers and has a soft spot for finance and taxation. He is committed to seeing Carta grow into a name synonymous with the payments industry.
